Mission to Seafarers needs more help to serve seamen stranded by Covid on ships worldwide

If nothing else the Covid crisis laid bare the plight of seafarers as no other event since the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. Even then, should a merchant seaman choose to leave his ship and be free of the threat of being sunk by German U-boats, he was free to do so.

This was not so in the Covid crisis. Seafarers had to stay on their ships for months if not years because of a scare that had little substance, a disease that did not result in many deaths beyond the very sick and the very old.

War risk rises in the maritime sector as world powers square off in conflicts that do not yield to diplomacy

Given the sabre-rattling over the Ukraine, which threatens to explode into the clang of battle, there has been much concern in the underwriting community about war risk and who pays for what in the maritime world.

Not surprisingly, that was a focus of leading marine insurer Gard, of Arendal, Norway, at its 16th annual Charterers and Traders Geneva seminar where delegates wrestled with the theme "Risky Business: Managing geopolitical security threats in Marine Insurance P&I Club News, Piracy and Security."

Shifting Emissions Trading System responsibility from shipowners to ship charterers in EU scheme

The European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS) is now an accomplished fact, as simply reporting ship emissions will no longer do as Europe moves to full taxation of CO2 "pollution".

However, legal difficulties have since arisen in determining responsibilty for such emissions - the shipowner say the current rules, though some would argue that should be the ship charterer instead.

International shipping has been for too long encrusted with regulations that make no sense

To many, if not most, in the maritime world, there are far too many regulations. And as though there weren't enough, bureaucrats the world over are hard at work producing even more.

Hendrik Busshoff, head of product autonomy solutions at, Wartsila Voyage, a Finnish marine equipment maker, has set himself the unenviable task of making an appeal in Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide to the powers that be to take stock of the vast regulatory jungle and see if it can be cut back.
